The Pipeline of Talent

Currently there are more jobs available than workers to fill them, and the unemployment rate continues to stay at record setting lows. Employers must utilize all of their community resources to fill their positions with qualified individuals. Utilizing the pipeline of talent available through the local colleges and universities is essential.

And, local employers are in luck! According to the Springfield Economic Regional Partnership, the Springfield Metropolitan Area is home to over 46,000 college students. This presents a major opportunity for employers to bring fresh talent into their workforce.

Many of the colleges and universities also have programs for non-traditional students. These individuals have already been in the workforce and have chosen to change career paths or enhance their skills through education.

Employers should consider creating more robust internship programs, cooperative partnership opportunities, job shadowing, or mentoring programs. These types of programs present a diverse array of ‘students’ to choose from when filling positions within organizations.

To become more involved with area students, employers can also check out the local university and college calendars to participate in career fairs, on-campus interviews, mock interviews, and workshops on resume writing.

Reaching out to local college students, whether traditional or non-traditional, helps us keep and develop talent in Springfield, which is not only good for business but also for the community.
