CoxHealth’s Employee Wellness Program’s Evolution

CoxHealth started an employee wellness program several decades ago.  In 2011, we made a concerted decision to perform a fundamental overhaul.  This required us to realign the program with organizational strategic goals and revamp the program to integrate with our employee health plan.  After a thorough business analysis, major investments in technology, plan design, cafeteria offerings, and other benefits have resulted in a systematic decrease in annual health plan funding requirements.  Seven years later, nearly 90% of employees participate in the program.  Additionally, annual health plan funding has slowed to single digit increases. 

One of the wellness program’s key architects, Andy Hedgpeth will discuss the strategy behind this decision as well as the communication plan to employees and their spouses for the multi-year phase-in.  Additionally, he will share lessons learned and the next-gen deployment of CoxHealth’s wellness program design to better align to their strategic pillars of wellness.

Presenter: Andy Hedgpeth, VPHR, CoxHealth

Andy Hedgpeth is a lifelong Southwest Missouri native. He holds a Master in Business Administration degree with a Healthcare Management emphasis from Missouri State University. He joined CoxHealth in June 2008 as Compliance Coordinator and accepted the role of System Director for Benefits and Employee Relations in spring 2009. This role administered all aspects of employee benefits for the enterprise including $850 million in employee retirement plan assets and a 14,000-member health plan exceeding $90 million in annual expenditures. Other duties included rewards and recognition, progressive disciplinary, leave administration and reasonable accommodations for the health system.

In his current role as Vice President of Human Resources, Andy serves as an active member of the CoxHealth executive leadership team in providing strategy, planning and implementation of human capital management to meet the strategic business goals for CoxHealth’s 12,000 employees and 900 physicians. Andy maintains an HR budget for both traditional and international recruitment, retention, compensation, benefits, and employee relations functions in addition to a leadership development institute, three childcare centers, pastoral care, and more than 1,200 volunteers across six campuses.

Crowning achievements include the system's two-time recognition as the 417 Best Place to Work and recognition as Forbes Magazine’s Top Employer listing for the state of Missouri, the launch of an international nursing recruitment program; integration of CoxHealth’s wellness program with its employee health plan, cafeterias, and fitness centers; the opening of CoxHealth’s 1906 Employee Store; and the launch of a system wide employee engagement strategy that encompasses a formal rewards and recognition program. Andy also played major roles in the integration of multiple acquired facilities and group practices.

Andy serves as an active member of the Ozark Board of Education and the Missouri State University President’s Diversity Council. He has served on the Harmony House Domestic Violence Shelter Board, City Utilities Community Credit Union Board, and Missouri State University Alumni Association Advisory Board. He helped charter the VHA Mid-America Benefits Advisory Board and still serves on the Missouri Chamber of Commerce Industrial Relations Advisory Board. He spent two years as a Missouri Quality Award examiner, and participates in several internal committees for CoxHealth. He spends his free time with his wife, Amanda, and their three children, Ella, Reid, and Sophie.  They reside in Ozark, MO.

Presenter: Sarah Wyman, Total Rewards Manager, CoxHealth

Sarah has been with CoxHealth for over 10 years within the Human Resources Department.  She started her career as a Data Analyst and quickly moved to the position of Compensation Analyst.  In 2012, she was promoted to her first leadership role at CoxHealth as the Compensation Manager before moving to her current role as Total Rewards Manager in 2016.  Sarah is a member of the Workforce Development Board with the Missouri Job Center.  Outside of work, Sarah enjoys spending time with her family.  In April of this year, Sarah and her husband, Dan, welcomed their son, Thomas, to the family.  They also have a 2 year old daughter named Charlotte.

Presenter: Eric Maxwell, System Director, CoxHealth

Eric grew up in Southwest Missouri and attended Missouri State University in which he received a Bachelor of Finance and a Master of Business Administration.  He began his career at CoxHealth in 2004 as a Compensation Analyst and shortly after became the Compensation Manager.  In 2008, he was promoted to System Director of Compensation and HRIS before starting his new role of System Director of Total Rewards in 2016.  Eric is focused on innovative methods for improving our ability to recruit and retain employees along with designing a performance management system to improve overall performance measures across the organization.   Eric received the Springfield Business Journal’s Human Resources Professional of the Year in 2013, served as a Missouri Quality Award Examiner, and just recently received the CoxHealth Fire Starter award for innovation.  Eric enjoys spending time with his wife, Kerry, and their two children Spencer and Kaylee.
